10 Hidden Horror-Comedy Movies That Are Actually Terrifying
1. Society (1989)
Have you ever watched a movie that goes from zero to one hundred so quickly it takes you off guard? Well, prepare for a taste of that if you check out this wild and wacky flick. But, a bit of advice before you get started, bring a sick bag with you, because you're going to need it.
Society follows a teenager named Bill Whitney, who seems like an average lad on the surface. But, beneath the varsity jacket and bravado lies a paranoid and confused young man. This paranoia comes to fruition when he begins to suspect that his family are part of a grotesque cult of social elites who partake in *ahem* massive, violent orgies. Again, don't forget the sick bag.
The film has a relatively slow and tedious build, with plenty of rising tension and peculiar encounters, but as it runs along, things get stranger and stranger. Towards the end, you'll see body horror so vile it'll stick with you forever. The practical effects (courtesy of the equally sick and talented Screaming Mad George) are painfully disturbing - but also pretty damn hilarious.
Alongside the body horror comes some amusing performances, a twisted sense of humour, and an on-the-nose satire of classism. Whether intentional or not, this flick is both a laugh riot and a sickening experience.
