10 Hidden Horror-Comedy Movies That Are Actually Terrifying
2. Housebound (2014)
Housebound? That's something everyone's gotten a little used to in the past few years. Well, let's just say, this movie makes quarantine look like a dream.
This 2014 horror flick follows Kylie, a troubled young girl who is placed under house arrest after trying to steal from an ATM. She moves back in with her mother, who promptly warns her that the house is haunted. Although she's sceptical at first, things soon begin to turn strange, and it becomes clear that something twisted is going on.
This is one of those unique movies that manages to be two things simultaneously - a side-splitting comedy and a compellingly frightening horror. It's incredibly effective at both halves of its identity.
The comedy will have you in fits, as it's all so relatable and mundane, providing an amusingly nonchalant contrast to the horror. This is especially noticeable in Rima Te Wiata's performance as Kylie's adorable and naïve mum.
On the scary side comes the tension and mystery. The film constantly ups the stakes by increasing the danger and letting the secrets of the house (and the surrounding neighbourhood) unravel. It litters its runtime with high-octane scares, leading to a compelling climax that throws you some massive twists and turns. You won't leave the edge of your seat for a second.
