10 Hidden Horror-Comedy Movies That Are Actually Terrifying
4. House (1977)
Sometimes, horror can provide a complex experience that takes you to new heights of storytelling, all under the guise of scaring you. Movies like Hereditary and The Shining show that the genre can encapsulate the feeling of fear while still exploring profound and potent themes. But then, there are other times where it's so bats*** crazy you can't avoid having a good time. Take a wild guess which of those categories this movie falls into.
House shows as a schoolgirl and six friends venture to her aunt's country house. Whilst there, they discover that their venue is haunted, as supernatural spirits possess inanimate objects, all of which come after them.
This movie is a ride so wild it makes Thorpe Park look like your local playground. You'll see some genuinely ridiculous things, like girls being eaten by pianos, lighting fixtures and grandfather clocks.
It also has an over-the-top visual style, with deliberately unrealistic VFX and bizarre imagery. The whole thing looks like it was dreamed up from the mind of a child. That's not even hyperbole, as a kid did create the concept - the director's daughter, to be precise. No wonder it's so absurd yet fun.
