Having made a name for himself as the director of photography on a number of Christopher Nolan films it was perhaps inevitable that Wally Pfitser would follow in the footsteps of the man who brought us Inception and Interstellar, tackling a high concept movie of his own. There were certainly high hopes for Transcendence being very good - it wasn't just the star presence of Johnny Depp which led to some enthusiasm (although Depp's star has been on the wane of late) but the concept itself, in which a scientists seeks to create a sentient machine which contains the full understanding of the human race. Unfortunately, what we got was an interminable dull affair which was far more yawn-inducing than anything else, with a predictable "anti-technology" faction never quite feeling like a genuine threat and a muddled philosophy which failed to capitalize on the theme's potential.
