10 Highest Ever Grossing Movies Released In May - Ranked From Worst To Best

2. The Avengers

Domestic Gross: $623,357,910 It could have been an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions... and yet thanks to the exemplary talents of Mr. Joss Whedon, best known for his work on shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, The Avengers successfully managed to bring together a team of superheroes from a whole variety of MCU movies, and made what many would consider to be the definitive movie in that canon. It didn't even matter that the plot was stupid and didn't make a whole lot of sense - Whedon made it feel right that Tony Stark could banter with Steve Rogers. The Avengers is currently sitting pretty as the third highest-grossing movie of all time, behind James Cameron's impressive duo of Titantic and Avatar. Aside from being a special effects marvel, then, complete with some of the most explosive set-pieces ever rendered on the big screen, Whedon somehow crafted a movie that still paid respect to each and every character who happened to be apart of it (except maybe Hawkeye, who did get a little shortchanged). There are flaws, sure, but really... could we have hoped for a better movie than this? Not likely.
