10 Highest Grossing Sci-Fi Films Of All Time (Adjusted For Inflation)

9. The Empire Strikes Back

E T BOX OFFICE
Lucasfilm

ADJUSTED FOR INFLATION: $1.65 billion

ORIGINAL BOX OFFICE: $547.9 million

Considered by many as the definitive Star Wars film with a more mature tone compared to its predecessor and that plot twist, it is no exaggeration to state that The Empire Strikes Back is a classic.

Audiences flocked to see the sequel to 1977's Star Wars and despite a fairly mixed critical response, with some dismissing its middle-of-the-story plot as boring, it still drew in a large crowd come opening weekend.

While its final box office haul of $547.9 million sounds fairly disappointing by a modern audience's standards, in 1980 this was the equivalent of $1.65 billion in today's money.
