Even when Iron Man launched the MCU, the idea of a shared universe was pretty pie in the sky, and the idea that any studio could make something as big as a superhero team-up was ludicrous. Especially as the studio in question was still fairly new and had previously handed out its own rights for chicken feed. On top of that, the fact that nobody had been able to make a Justice League movie, despite successful Batman and Superman movies cast further doubt.

But Marvel achieved their aim in style, balancing six superheroes, a villain with an ego the size of a planet, an alien invasion, backstory hints and development, somehow. Sure, the third act is a little tacked on for an escalation, but all-in-all, it's the ensemble movie we all deserved.

And if Iron Man made the MCU possible, it was The Avengers that made the next two phases possible.
