1. Crimes of Passion (1984)
Crimes of Passion is a Ken Russell film and you just know that a Russell film is a) never boring and b) plenty kinky! Bobby Grady attends a self help group because his wife has lost all interest in him. He owns an electronics store and does a bit of surveillance on the side. Grady is approached by the owner of a fashion house who suspects an employee - Joanna is stealing designs. These fears are proved innocent but Grady discovers that Joanna moonlights as a prostitute - China Blue by night. He starts to see her professionally and then personally. Their involvement is compromised by his guilt and her intimacy issues. We get to know of her clients. The most notable is the 'Reverend' Peter Shayne who preaches against sex on street corners, goes to peep shows and sniffs amyl nitrate and carries a suitcase full of sex toys along with his bible. Grady and Joanna gradually fall in love. Joanna tries to run from her feelings by participating in extreme sex acts such as buggering a young police man with his truncheon. The Reverend is growing more insane. He has a dangerous spiked dildo and he begins stalking and spying upon Joanna. Eventually there is a three way showdown between the Rev, Joanna and Grady. This ends happily for our lovers. Quite shocking really in just how far it goes with the kinkiness factor, Crimes of Passion is a very interesting study in human sexuality. What drives a highly successful fashion designer to pimp herself out as a $50 a time hooker? Why is the Reverend - Anthony Perkins, nobody does psychotic like Anthony Perkins - such a pervert on one hand and such a fundamentalist on the other? The film poses all of these questions for the viewer to contemplate. The sex scenes are quite explicit and kinky - if you call ramming a night stick up a policeman's jacksie kinky (I certainly think it ranks up there as one of the kinkiest scenes in mainstream cinema). The whole film has a sordid vibe and watching it makes you feel like you have been caught masturbating. But hey! It's a pleasurable act.
