10 Highly Questionable Actions Committed By George Lucas

5. Nuking The Fridge

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

When Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was announced, you can bet that millions of fans were excited by the announcement. It had been 19 years since the last Indiana Jones movie and the fan base had never dwindled throughout the years. George Lucas was back on board and tasked with producing a story (more on that later) with Harrison Ford reprising the iconic role and Steven Spielberg directing once again.

When the film came out, critics seemed to go for it while fans were split on the matter. While many facets of the movie have been argued for and against, there is one criticism that is almost universally derided: nuking the fridge. This refers to a scene that has been so lambasted, it is now a modern phrase akin to €œjump the shark€. In the scene, Indiana Jones finds himself at a nuclear testing area and is able to survive an atomic blast by hopping inside a refrigerator. The refrigerator flies up into the sky and crashes down with a 70-year-old Indiana in tip-top shape.

Although Steven Spielberg has tried to take the blame for this scene, George Lucas himself has stated that it was an idea of his that goes back years and years. Too bad Steven didn€™t just say €œNo€ to the entire movie.
