10 Hilarious Movies Nobody Expected To Laugh At

3. The Happening (2008)

Battlefield Earth
20th Century Fox

The Happening may very well be the pinnacle of M. Night Shyamalan’s mid-2000s downward spiral. Starring Mark Wahlberg as a high school science teacher named Elliot, The Happening is based around a mysterious and unexplained mass-suicide.

At first, it is believed that a terrorist attack is responsible for the mass-suicides which have spread across the US. (Best just to roll with it and not ask too many questions.) Elliot and his wife decide to flee Philadelphia as a result. As the story continues to develop, it’s found that the suicides are in fact being caused by inhaling some sort of toxin which “switches off” the part of the brain that stops people from harming themselves. (Seriously, just roll with it.)

Now remember, this is a Shyamalan film, so it of course needs a clever twist! What was the cause of the toxin? Terrorists? A depressed villain out for revenge against humanity? A horrific, wide-scale accident?

Plants. It was plants. Plants trying to stop the world from over-populating. Sentient plants murdered everyone.

Was this a preachy hippy movie about looking after the planet, or an ultra-conservative anti-cannabis piece? This film has left audiences pondering that very question for over a decade.
