Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the classic science fiction novel by H. G. Wells might not have reached the full potential available from the source material, relocating the action from Victorian England to present day America, but Spielberg is nothing if not an accomplished orchestrator or spectacular set-pieces - what it lacked in epic man vs. martian battle sequences it made up for in tension and atmosphere. Tom Cruise's central performance as Ray Ferrier however, did nothing to help improve the film; Cruise seems to be going through the motions from start to finish, much as can be said for his by-the-numbers performances in any number of movies before and since. At least the Golden Raspberry Awards recognised this fact, nominating him for a Worst Actor award for his lack of effort. It's not the first time Cruise has received this nomination - the Razzies singled out his performance in Cocktail as particularly bad back in 1989. Whether or not he attends the ceremony and collects them though, is anyone's guess. Agree or disagree with the selection on this list? Which awful performances have stood out for you in great movies?
