10 Hollywood Blockbusters That Were Saved By The Overseas Box Office
2. Escape Plan (2013)
Worldwide Box Office: $137.3 million (81.7% Overseas)
Once again, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger proved gloomy box office forecasts wrong with Escape Plan. Although Stallone and Schwarzenegger had already appeared together in The Expendables and The Expendables 2, Escape Plan was the first film to star both action movie icons in lead roles. Because of that, when it opened in fourth place and under $10 million in the U.S. critics once again wrote Stallone and Schwarzenegger off as has-beens. Its $25.1 million U.S. box office gross was extremely disappointing and one of the lowest of either actor’s career.
But as The Expendables series and Terminator Genisys proves, Stallone and Schwarzenegger still have box office clout outside of the U.S. The prison break film did strong business overseas, especially in China, where it grossed $40.9 million. It was also a solid performer throughout Asia and Europe, and the $112.2 million international box office easily recouped the film’s $50 million budget. Once again, the sexagenarian “has-beens” had yet another sizable international hit on their hands.
