10 Hollywood Career Paths Nobody Saw Coming

5. Roland Joffe - From Twice Oscar-Nominated Director To Making Straight-To-DVD Movies (Starring Mischa Barton)

Roland Joffe And now for something almost completely the opposite, we have Roland Joffe, who was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on 1984's The Killing Fields and 1986's The Mission, and then slowly seemed to stop giving a crap about his career. If you thought it couldn't get any worse than Joffe producing 1993's awful Super Mario Bros, this descent culminated in Joffe directing the 2007 Elisha Cuthbert-starring torture porn vehicle Captivity - which posted horrendous reviews - and the 2011 film You and I, a glorified taTu fan film that stars Mischa Barton. The film was so bad that even Barton refused to promote it, and it hasn't had a proper theatrical release in the Western world, and likely never will. Joffe has one project awaiting release, Singularity, and another, In God We Trust, in pre-production, but going by the sounds of things, he's not going to be reclaiming his mantle anytime soon.
