4. Marisa Tomei: Oscar Winner
You would like to think that picking an Oscar winner was a little more complicated than just reading one name from an envelope. You would hope that in the event of a disaster, i.e the incorrect nominee being read out as the winner, there would be some sort of fail-safe to ensure that it never happened in the first place. My Cousin Vinny is a great film. A funny film. A film that is for all the family. A film you can expect high jinx and over the top hilarity from its classic fish out of water scenario. But it is certainly not a film where you would expect Winner of Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to lie on the DVD case. The Academy often get it wrong, granted, but they rarely give the supporting actress award to an almost gross out, laugh out loud comedy. Consider the category that year: Vanessa Redgrave Joan Plowright Judy Davis Miranda Richardson Marisa Tomei Without prior knowledge, who would your money go on? It sure as hell wouldn't be Tomei. But due to the supposed lack of glasses strapped lovingly to his ears, Jack Palance allegedly read out the wrong name from the envelope and gave the gong to Marisa. The look on her face displayed an emotion just about everyone in the room was feeling - How? Some people claim a mistake, whilst others even stretch as far as the illumanti being responsible - somehow getting twisted revenge on the one aspect of common culture they struggle to control. True? Thinking about it logically, its fair to say that Marisa was indeed the dark horse of the category. So dark that her chances of winning were totally eclipsed by the fact she actually did. To go back on such a huge mistake as she walked up to the podium would be a much bigger embarrassment, she accepted the award and the rest is simply history. Whether she was supposed to win or not is something only a very select few will ever know.
