10 Hollywood Stars Who Got REALLY Angry When They Didn't Win An Oscar

You'd be forgiven for forgetting that John Wayne was ever up for an Oscar. Do they give out Academy Awards for Best Hat?

In one of his non-cowboy roles, Wayne played Sergeant John M. Stryker in the 1949 war epic The Sands of Iwo Jima. It landed The Duke his first ever Oscar nomination for Best Actor at the following year's ceremony, where he lost out to Broderick Crawford.

When actors had names like Broderick Crawford. Those were the days.

Wayne was apparently very unhappy with this decision, not least because he'd actually been offered the role that had beaten him!

Director Robert Rossen asked Wayne to play the lead part in his movie All The King's Men. Wayne turned it down, claiming that the film was an un-American bashing of the country's government.

He must have been kicking himself when the film won three Oscars in 1950, including Best Picture. The gunslinger himself said, "I wouldn’t have minded losing so much if anyone else had won."

At least he got to pick up the award 19 years later for True Grit. Now that's an American movie!
