I Am Legend was another rock-solid Hollywood venture for Will Smith, albeit one that's stymied slightly by a weak ending, one which was changed after test audiences didn't like the more thoughtful, philosophical original climax. Warner Bros. must be kicking themselves now, then, because Smith's character dying at the end left them in a very weak position as far as the possibility of a sequel went, and as such they decided to go about fashioning a prequel, confusingly called I Am Legend 2. Presumably, this prequel would chronicle how the world was taken down, and how Neville came to be the sole survivor by himself, but like so many of these projects, do we really
need to know? I felt like this film covered all of the finer points especially well, and to devote an entire film to that set-up just feels like overkill. Thankfully, it's never gone anywhere, though given that Will Smith could really need a box office smash right now, maybe he'll do it eventually.
