Ari Aster’s second horror masterpiece after Hereditary, a folk-horror movie about a group of young adults visiting a small village in Sweden, has gained a grand following in the year since its release. However, Midsommar also marks the most violent and gory film to be release in the mainstream for a long time.

With its 150-minute run-time, Midsommar isn’t scared of showing a vast slew of gory scenes. Beginning with horrific scenes of suicide and ending with a Wicker Man style burned alive sequence, Midsommar pulls no punches, and the special effects on offer make the film incredibly hard to sit through. The worst scene, however, pays reference to an execution style of old; where unfortunate victim Simon is found in a barn, his body brutally formed into a Blood Eagle - a favored execution method of middle-ages Viking warriors.

The worst part about the scene is that, although Simon’s lungs are outside his body, it’s heavily implied that Simon is still alive through all this, making this scene one of the most shocking in recent cinema history. Although Midsommar is a film with much more going for it than just blood and gore, there’s no denying that that scene in particular will stay with you well after the movie’s finished.
