10 Horror Anthologies You Must See Before You Die
9. Southbound
A solid and stylish indie horror anthology, Southbound brings together the talents of producer and Bloody Disgusting co-founder Brad Miska and directors including David Bruckner, Roxanne Benjamin and filmmaking trio Radio Silence.
Five deftly interwoven vignettes are set on the same cursed stretch of desolate desert highway and follow the unfortunate characters who find themselves stranded there: a girl band picked up by a creepy couple after their van breaks down, a man searching for his missing sister and a family stalked by two men with murder on their minds.
As they encounter demons, a demented cult and mysterious floating creatures that tail their every move it soon transpires that all is not what it seems on this sinister and seemingly purgatorial stretch of highway.
Unsettling and clever, it’s a film that provokes more questions than it provides answers and begs repeat viewings to catch all the clues craftily hidden within its frames that connect each story.
Standout Segment:
The gory body horror of ‘The Accident’ stands out as Southbound’s best segment in which an unassuming man accidentally knocks down a woman on that damned highway. After alerting the emergency services, he’s directed to an abandoned hospital and told to perform impromptu surgery to save her life guided only by a supposed paramedic’s increasingly warped instruction with predictably grisly results.
