10 Horror Anthology Movies You've Probably Never Seen
8. Necronomicon
Considering the popularity of H.P. Lovecraft these days, and how many of his stories were shorts, it's a wonder there haven't been more horror anthology films that cover his work. That being said, back in the '90s, adaptations of his work were prime material for B-movie horror from the likes of horror maestro Stuart Gordon, and genre mainstay Brian Yuzna.
It should come as no surprise then that Yuzna had a hand in this anthology, helped ably by Christophe Gans (Silent Hill) and Shûsuke Kaneko (Death Note) very early in their careers. The anthology consists of three segments that loosely follow three of Lovecraft's stories, with a wraparound that features horror icon Jeffrey Combs actually playing H.P. Lovecraft himself.
Of the three segments, The Drowned is the best (based on The Rats in the Walls), with the following two leaving a little to be desired. However, there is a lot to love in the practical effects within the movie that were in part created by another genre legend in Screaming Mad George.
