10 Horror Anthology Movies You've Probably Never Seen
3. Nightmare Cinema
Considering the recent output of Mickey Rourke these days, you'd be forgiven for thinking a modern horror anthology he stars in is probably a bit rubbish. Surprisingly, and delightfully, it is far from it. In fact, Nightmare Cinema is really good.
Strengthened by an experienced team of horror directors that includes Mick Garris (Masters of Horror), David Slade (30 Days of Night), Joe Dante (Gremlins), and Ryūhei Kitamura (Versus), this is a horror anthology you don't want to miss.
The wrap around narrative has Rourke playing The Projectionist, as he shows five strangers who visit his movie theatre their deepest secrets and darkest fears in the form of five different stories.
The great thing about Nightmare Cinema is that each segment is so different from the other, both in terms of narrative, tone, and look. Slade's segment This Way To Egress is a beautifully shot segment that has a woman experiencing unsettling shifts in reality, whereas Kitamura delivers the utterly bonkers Mashit, that involves a sex obsessed demon and catholic school girls. But the highlight is easily the first segment, The Thing in the Woods, which plays with the slasher genre so wonderfully you can't help but smile.
