Aside from final girls and sometimes the villains, there aren't many characters who make it out alive in horror movies. Between becoming a slasher icon’s latest fatality, falling prey to an elaborate death trap, or being the victim of some paranormal happenings, there are limitlessly gruesome ways to die in the world of horror.

However, as much as these deceased characters would have ideally preferred to go on living their fictional lives in their respective films, they may be comforted in the knowledge that there are other characters out there who suffered a far graver fate than they did. For these unluckier characters, death would have been the more preferrable option.

From enduring extreme torment to undergoing sickening transformations, there are plenty of horror movie characters out there who got the raw end of the deal. The terror of their respective films usually resides in witnessing the horrific experiences they go through. Moreover, the thought that some of these scenarios could feasibly happen in real life makes these films that bit more terrifying.

After going through what they did, these unfortunate characters would wish they were dead instead.

Beware of major spoilers ahead for the following.

Searchlight Pictures

When viewers meet Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) at the start of Fresh, she’s having the worst luck with dating. She can’t stand the frustrations that come with meeting new people, and after a horrendous dinner date ruins her evening, she’s ready to give up on dating completely.

This is when she meets Steve (Sebastian Stan). He’s awkward but charming, and the pair hit things off. Not long after, they meet for drinks and a romance ensues. The pair’s chemistry is so sweet that the opening act feels more like a rom com than a horror. However, things take a sinister turn when Steve suggests they go on a weekend trip together.

When Steve takes Noa back to his place before they leave, he drugs her and imprisons her in a luxurious room. Though she initially believes Steve is going to murder her, the truth is much worse.

It’s revealed that Steve is a plastic surgeon and a cannibal who abducts young women to use them as cattle to sell their flesh to clients. Over the next few days, Noa is gradually stripped of parts of her body as she listens to the suffering of the other women trapped alongside her.
