10 Horror Films Where Only One Person Dies
9. When A Stranger Calls Back (1993)
Some out there may not even know there was a sequel to 1979's When A Stranger Calls. This is primarily because the film debuted on Showtime and has remained little-seen since. This is truly a shame as the follow-up is a masterclass in tension.
The movie follows Julia, a young student trying to cope with the trauma of being tormented 5 years before. An unknown assailant terrorized her before kidnapping the children in her care. When things begin appearing out of place in her apartment, Julia seeks the help of returning actors Carol Kane and Charles Durning.
This sequel stands head-and-shoulders above the original. It extends the trope of a shocking opening scene to fill the first half hour and manages to hold that tension throughout the runtime. Everything is edge-of-your-seat tense here, as the film is packed with paranoia and subtle scares. The tiniest thing seems horrifically ominous: an open window, a misplaced vodka bottle or even a brick wall. We feel the constantly looming threat of someone watching and no one in Julia's life is safe.
It is only upon reflection we realize only one person has died. I won't reveal who, but rather implore you to seek this film out and keep your eyes peeled during the nail-biting climax.
