10 Horror Movie 2020 Fates Worse Than Death

4. The Wretched - Mallory Becomes The Witch's Host

The Wretched 2020
IFC Midnight

Being a film about a witch who causes people to forget their families, there are many twists and turns in The Wretched. But it's the fate that befalls the children that leaves the biggest impression.

In this flick, Ben, his father Liam and new friend Mallory take it upon themselves to break the witch's curse after Mallory's sister is taken. Of course, it's not an easy task as they can't even rely on their own memories being correct, and Ben realises that he's forgotten he has a brother that the witch has also kidnapped.

Through perseverance, the gang manages to venture into the forest, rescue the missing children, and seemingly kill the witch but, just as you begin to catch the whiff of a happy ending, we get our final twist.

Ben, about to depart back to live with his mother, waves Mallory off from the shore as she gives sailing lessons to the kids in the town... before noticing that a flower she has just given him is fake. The calling card of the witch herself.

It's hinted that the teens didn't vanquish the witch at all, and that it's actually now in control of Mallory, who's taking these kids off to a terrifying fate.
