10 Horror Movie Characters Given Last Minute Deaths
5. Dr. Susan McCallister - Deep Blue Sea
There's perhaps no more famous example of a horror movie character getting a last-minute death than Deep Blue Sea's alleged protagonist, Dr. Susan McCallister (Saffron Burrows).
In the original script and all the way through principal photography, McCallister survived the genetically engineered sharks' rampage, but when Warner Bros. test-screened the film, they had no idea how audiences would react.
Rather than express satisfaction at Susan's survival, they hated her, seeing her as primarily responsible for the shark outbreak, and wishing to see her "punished" for meddling with nature in the most ultimate way possible.
According to director Renny Harlin himself, a test screening feedback form simply implored him, "Kill the b*tch!," and so that's exactly what Harlin did, by way of a brief reshoot.
And so, in the final film Susan is brutally eaten by a shark during the climax while attempting to distract it from swimming into the open sea.
Better yet, Harlin claims he even cut some of Susan's more affable moments throughout the film to make her seem more stern and less-approachable, ensuring maximum gratification when she finally got devoured.
