10 Horror Movie Characters Who Died Off-Screen In The Sequel

5. Father Burke - The Nun II

Final Destination
Warner Bros.

When the first trailer for The Nun II dropped, many fans questioned where one of the first film's principal characters, Father Burke (Demián Bichir), was.

After all, Burke survived the events of that movie, and given that he was one of its more intriguing characters, why wouldn't he return for at least a cursory sequel cameo?

Yet Burke is nowhere to be seen in The Nun II, and to rub salt in the wound, the film cements the finality of his absence by revealing that he died of cholera during the four-year interval between the two stories.

It didn't help endear fans to the already aggressively mediocre sequel, and in an interview director Michael Chaves implied that Burke was a casualty of the movie's cast of characters becoming crowded.

Chaves did add, however, that he flirted with the idea of having demon nun Valak (Bonnie Aarons) terrorise Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) with a vision of a zombified Father Burke, but alas, it didn't come to pass.

All the same, Burke deserved better than this.
