Ti West's The Innkeepers follows Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy), two employees of a soon-to-close hotel who begin witnessing paranormal activity there.

Even though the duo are ghost hunting enthusiasts, Luke eventually decides that he's had enough of the increasingly unsettling supernatural events in their midst, and makes the decision to flee the hotel in the middle of the night, leaving Claire on her own.

However, Luke's conscience ends up overpowering his more sensible thoughts, and he returns to the hotel a short while later. In the very least, Luke's lucky enough to survive the night, but Claire? Nope - she dies of an asthma attack when the ghost confronts her.

And so, Luke has the worst, most traumatic day at work ever as he gets to watch Claire's corpse being wheeled out of the hotel by the authorities - a sight he could've handily avoided if he just listened to his lizard brain and stayed gone after leaving.
