10 Horror Movie Characters Who Should've Been Final Girls

6. Kate Schmidt - Fear Street Part One: 1994

In the first chapter of R. L. Stine's supernatural slasher trilogy, a teenager called Deena Johnson discovers her hometown has been cursed by a witch. Due to the rampant unexplained kills in the area, the town of Shadyside soon becomes the murder capital of the United States.

Deena is a serviceable Final Girl, but she's not as compelling as her friend, Kate Schmidt. Though the overachieving cheerleader has big dreams for the future, she feels like her life is going nowhere in Shadyside. Desperate to avoid a tedious life, she and her boyfriend begin selling drugs, hoping to make enough to start a life anew somewhere else.

Kate may be no angel, but she has a surprising amount of depth and a lot of potential to grow even more.

Which is why it's a pity to see her pops her clogs during the showdown. Despite being killed off in the first instalment, Kate is more fleshed out than Deena in all three films.

Worst of all, Kate suffers the most violent death. Rather than getting a knife to the heart or a hatchet to the head, the killer rams her upper body through a bread-slicer, turning her skull into a blood fountain. Just to make her death more insulting, the police erroneously pin the murders on Kate and her boyfriend.

It goes without saying - Kate deserved better.
