Robert Altman's innovative 1972 psychological horror finds a way onto this list due to its subject matter. The frequent exposure to only a handful of characters makes this film extremely claustrophobic, and you'd be forgiven for finding yourself wanting to kill all of the characters in the same way that the protagonist, Cathryn, does.

Cathryn is a schizophrenic woman who has not been diagnosed with the disorder before the opening credits roll, nor until the closing credits that leave you wondering if your reflection really is your reflection. It's an unsettling depiction of Schizophrenia and the hallucinations that accompany it, but provides an accurate reflection of the varying levels of severity an individual can face when not able to control their disorder.

Our protagonist is plagued by images of an 'evil' version of herself that she tries to murder at every opportunity. Only at the very end of the film do we discover that her final, and successful attempt, at murdering her alter actually turns out to be her husband, Hugh, whom is lying at the bottom of a cliff after having been knocked off by Cathryn in her car.

Had Cathryn sought professional help earlier on when others around her, most specifically her husband, had noticed that she was extremely unwell, then perhaps her reign of murder would not have ensued.
