10 Horror Movie Endings That Made You Say WHAT?!

Did that just happen?

Evil Dead
Warner Bros.

Many auteurs, writers, and raconteurs believe the most important part of the story is the ending. Filmmakers of horror should keep this philosophy in mind since a movie's final scene is the last chance to scare the hell out of viewers.

The Sixth Sense, The Mist, and Psycho are considered to have among the best endings in the history of film, not just because they were well-written or well-acted but because they shook us to our core. Even though it's hard to recall a film's plot if you haven't seen it in a while, a shocking climax can stay with you for the rest of your life.

Sometimes, we are left reeling because the movie culminates with a jaw-dropping twist. Other times, the conclusion leaves a huge impact on us since it went in a direction we did not see coming. But every once in a while, the final scene stays with us because it was... just.... stupid.

Whether it was for better or for worse, you're guaranteed not to forget the endings of these horror movies any time soon.

10. Krampus

Evil Dead
Universal Pictures

Krampus begins with the Engel family preparing their house for the Christmas season. However, the youngest son, Max, hates how mean-spirited his family is and so, loses his Christmas spirit. Max's disillusionment causes Santa Claus' dark twin, Krampus, to unleash his legion of monsters on the family. Even though the Engels put up a fight, they are all slaughtered by evil monsters, sadistic toys, and carnivorous gingerbread men.

With Max being the sole survivor, he begs Krampus to undo the evil he committed. Even though Krampus punishes those who turn their back on Christmas, you assume he will spare Max since he is a decent kid.

But nope. Despite Max telling Krampus he takes back his wish and apologises for not appreciating his family, the dark creature sends him to Hell.

Max then suddenly wakes up in his house to see his family are all safe and sound, implying the horrors he experienced were all a dream.

But this moment turns out to be a double fake-out! As Max embraces his family, the camera zooms out to reveal the Engel's house is sealed inside one of many snow globes, which reside in Krampus' lair.
