10 Horror Movie Endings That Made You Say WHAT?!

9. Saint Maud

Evil Dead
StudioCanal

Saint Maud follows a care worker who seeks redemption after accidentally killing a patient. After being hired by a terminally ill atheist called Amanda, Maud believes she can save her own soul if she convinces her new patient to accept God.

But after acting erratically, Maud is fired, causing her instability to worsen. Just as she is about to give up, Maud seems to speak with God, which compels her to carry on, justifying her increasingly threatening behaviour. After confronting Amanda once more, she is seemingly possessed by a demon, urging Maud to kill her. Believing she has fulfilled her penance, Maud walks onto a beach and sets herself on fire so she can ascend into heaven. As she ignites the flame, angelic wings appear on her back, causing onlookers to kneel before her to bask in her glory.

Throughout the movie, Maud comes across as an unreliable narrator so it's hard to tell if she spoke to a deity, the devil, or herself. But upon watching her take on the appearance of an angel, the audience believes she was chosen by God all along.

But in the final moment, the rug is swept beneath our feet yet again. In the very last second, the screen cuts to Maud screaming in agony as the flames char her body to the bone. Only in this final shot do we acknowledge that every religious encounter Maud experienced was a delusion.
