8. American Psycho
American Psycho centres around a Wall Street stockbroker called Patrick Bateman. Bateman is young, handsome, successful, and astoundingly rich. Unfortunately, he is also completely insane. When he isn't busy bonking hookers or comparing business cards with his fellow yuppies, he's hacking off heads and stabbing homeless people.
Even though Bateman is usually able to separate his hedonistic proclivities with his personal life, he becomes more unhinged as the story progresses. After seeing him try to feed a a cat to an ATM machine and hacking a woman to pieces with a chainsaw, viewers naturally assume the movie is going to conclude with the titular psychopath performing the most unspeakable act of evil possible.
But in the final scene, his lawyer informs him that Paul Allen, who Bateman supposedly killed, is alive and well. In that moment, Bateman has no idea what to think. Did he imagine the murder of Paul Allen? Has he ever killed anyone? Were all his psychotic moments just in his head? Before the viewer has a chance to process this revelation, the screen suddenly cuts to black.
