10 Horror Movie Franchises That Stupidly Killed Off Their Best Character

7. Alex Browning - Final Destination 2

In the original Final Destination, Alex (Devon Sawa) has a premonition of an imminent disaster, allowing him to cheat death. When he learns The Grim Reaper is after him, Alex does everything he can to protect himself and others who averted their death.

Now, killing off the best character is one thing, but Final Destination 2 commits the cardinal sin by terminating Alex off-screen. Playing devil's advocate, this decision could be justified if he had a creative death, as is custom in the franchise. Instead, Alex met his maker when a brick fell on his head. Because of how unceremonious his demise was, it felt like the filmmakers were deliberately trying to aggravate fans.

To be fair, Devon Sawa was unable to reprise the role due to a scheduling conflict. But that didn't mean Alex had to die. With a throwaway line, it could've been mentioned that Alex went into hiding, allowing the death-cheating master to return in any number of sequels.

Instead, he was replaced with characters that are uninteresting, forgettable, or flat-out annoying. By making Alex's death in Final Destination 2 set in stone, the franchise shot itself in the foot, since he can't come back without retconning the story.
