10 Horror Movie Heroes Everyone Forgets About

4. Helen Lyle - Candyman

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
Tri-Star Pictures

The original Candyman is a bit of a cult classic now. The titular villain has never reached the heights of Jason or Freddy, for example, but he's still a great movie monster, with a lot of depth to his character rather than just a terrifying façade. The movie has some interesting ideas throughout, and is much more nuanced and intelligent than the average slasher.

Helen Lyle also gets often overlooked as far as horror heroines go. She's a grad student studying urban legends when she comes across the Candyman, and from then onwards, things go from bad to worse.

Not only does Helen have to contend with a supernatural being, but she's attacked by gang members, pinned as the killer by police and committed to a psychiatric hospital, and even has a cheating husband at home waiting for her. You'd think she'd just leave well enough alone after that, but nope.

Helen is determined to rescue the young boy Candyman has kidnapped and shows bravery and resilience in the face of danger. She even makes the ultimate sacrifice and gives her own life to save the child, thus becoming a vengeful spirit herself. No good deed goes unpunished.
