10 Horror Movie Mistakes You Never Noticed Before
6. Restart My Heart - The Thing (1982)
John Carpenter's alien body horror The Thing was maligned and shunned at the time of its release, as audiences on both sides of the pond were gripped by a cultural conservatism that couldn't accommodate a film this unconventional and uncomfortable. Kurt Russell stars as RJ MacReady, a helicopter pilot on an Antarctic research base who finds himself in the midst of a shapeshifting alien attack, and when the going gets rough it's anyone's idea who the monster is.
During the scene in which geologist Norris (Charles Hallahan) appears to suffer a heart attack, Dr. Copper (Richard Dysart) attempts to revive him - via defibrillation. This seems common sense enough, given they have the setup and equipment to do it, and that Copper is a trained medical physician. There’s only one issue: before his arms are swallowed by the Thing (who has been masquerading as Norris in an attempt to dupe the other survivors), Copper attempts to defibrillate his stomach…
Granted, it makes for a gory and shocking scene, but nobody trained in medicine (and even most who aren't) could make such an obvious blunder in such vital circumstances, especially someone who had just mere seconds prior already shocked the man’s chest. But did you even notice, or were you too busy watching a man get his arms chomped off?
