10 Horror Movie Mistakes You Never Noticed Before
5. Closing Time - Thanksgiving (2023)
Though it may be hard to believe, it has been a whole year and a half since Eli Roth put himself on the map again with holiday slasher Thanksgiving. Developed from the fake trailer Roth made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse double-feature, Thanksgiving is a cautionary tale about greed and vengeance, which finds a killer pilgrim stalking the townsfolk of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The picture kicks off with an epic frenzy reminiscent of Roth's Green Inferno, when a baying mob of shoppers descends on the local superstore for some tasty Thanksgiving discounts. The chaos unleashed when they stampede into the shop claims the lives of the owner's wife Amanda Collins (Gina Gershon), security guard Doug (Chris Sandiford), and a customer, in typically grim fashion (snapped limbs, scalpings, etc.) - deaths that provide the killer's reason for existing.
However.
In reality, this scene could never unfold because Massachusetts state law does not permit stores (especially large retail stores and supermarkets) to be open on Thanksgiving. This is thanks to the state's so-called Blue Laws, which were originally conceived of to make sure people went to church and observed religious traditions. Given this is the foundation for the entire film, you would think Roth would have been more careful with his details.
