10 Horror Movie Musicals You Simply Have To See

Instead of screaming in terror, these movies show you that singing is a far better alternative.

When you think of musicals, the image of wide-eyed smiling faces beaming out into an enthralled crowd whilst they hold an exceptionally long note may come to mind. We see Julie Andrews running up that hill (not to make a deal with God), we hear the name ‘Maria’ – not the blood, guts and chills of the horror genre.

However, there are some truly fantastic scary musicals out there. I don’t mean the 2019 Cats movie, but musicals that take the state of being so emotional you simply have to burst into song and place it into a horrific world. And then, sometimes those staged stories get sent to the screen. Other times, wholly original ideas take these seemingly opposing genres and smush them together without being based on a stage production.

Like with many aspects of the horror genre as a whole, horror musicals are sorely overlooked and underappreciated. Thus, like a triumphant final act, this chorus of creeps will be given some of the attention they deserve.

10. Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes!

Anna and the Apocalypse
NAI Entertainment

This late seventies parody of monster movies ranging from Jaws to The Birds is just as bonkers as it sounds; the title tells you exactly what to expect. As you may have guessed, it follows the catastrophic rise of aggressive tomatoes that want to wipe out humanity.

Universally panned by critics upon its release, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! found itself right at home amongst B-Movie fans, becoming a cult classic. With a few references to other horror films peppered throughout, genre fans will have a fantastic time noticing all of them. And, perhaps to be expected, the film is very, very funny. Aside from its ridiculous premise, there are some truly hilarious jokes in this film that vary from self-referential to simple slapstick.

Technically, this is only just a musical, as it only features a few songs. But what songs they are! The opening narration track is both catchy and witty, and the song Puberty Love is sung by future Sound Garden and Pearl Jam member Matt Cameron! What else do you need in a movie?!
