10 Horror Movie Musicals You Simply Have To See

4. Repo! The Genetic Opera

Anna and the Apocalypse
Lionsgate

The precursor to Bousman’s Carnival, this sci-fi-horror-musical-monster is as dramatic and extravagant as the ‘opera’ part of the title would suggest. Set in the distant future, where organs are a highly prized commodity, a group known as Repo Men enforce payments to the evil corporation GeneCo. GeneCo is run by a… let’s say dysfunctional family who bicker and squabble which only makes the wider situation somehow even worse. Yep, it’s Eastenders in the far future with singing and organ transplants.

Filled to the brim with genre actors such as the brilliant Bill Mosely (who is clearly having the time of his life), and featuring cameos from Paris Hilton and even Joan Jett, Repo! is a love letter to B-Movies in many ways. Granted, it’s undoubtedly daft but its’ charm carries the story along. And of course, there’s the music.

The songs are as over the top as the larger-than-life characters, making all classic gothic literature look remarkably calm in comparison. Repo! was seen as silly and derivative upon its release in 2008, but has earned itself a passionate cult following that turn up to showings of the film in costume. The aforementioned Hilton even earned a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress for her role!

The reaction to Repo! was pretty unfair, as its silliness works in its favour to tell a completely unique story with campy terror and familiar faces that horror fans will love.

Make sure to put a pin in costumed audiences – it’ll feature later on in this list…
