10 Horror Movie Mysteries That Should NEVER Have Been Answered
6. It's The End Of The World As We Know It... Again - Cabin In The Woods (2011)
It can really smart when a great film lets itself down at the very last second, but that's precisely what Joss Whedon's meta-horror Cabin in the Woods did back in 2011 with one final reveal.
The film sees five stereotypical college friends -- the jock, the virgin, the dumb blonde, etc -- abscond to a cabin in the woods for a hard-drinking getaway. Soon enough, magical objects present themselves and monsters come a-calling, starting with some undead hillbillies. But, despite its cliché trappings, this is no ordinary horror movie setup. The monsters are all fake, created by white-collar pen-pushers across the globe in order to collect human sacrifices and abate some mysterious force down below.
The film is a veritable what's-what of horror movie creatures and keeps us guessing as to the real big bad behind it all. Unfortunately, in an exposition-laden finale, Sigourney Weaver's boss bitch The Director walks out and explains the plot, sucking all of the mystery from the film. The final decision of the remaining college buds not to sacrifice either themselves or each other is a great addition, but spelling it out for us before closing on a gigantic hand smashing its way out of the ground... not so much.
