10 Horror Movie Openings That Get Worse The More You Think About It

1. Jaws

If you haven't seen the iconic opening of 1975's Jaws, then what are you even doing.

Chrissie Watkins' final swim is one of the greatest cinematic openings of any genre and has rightfully taken its place in pop culture history.

It's starts innocently enough - well, as innocent as a young woman swimming naked in the ocean can be - but things soon get dicey when it is revealed that Chrissie isn't alone in the water.

After being toyed with by her unseen assailant, Chrissie clings to a buoy for safety. This is futile though, as she is eventually pulled under the waves, never to be seen alive again.

Jaws' opening isn't just scary because of the excellent camera work and Susan Backlinie's performance, but also because all the film is showing is nature at play.

Sharks are predators, they hunt live prey and kill without prejudice. The 'villain' of Jaws isn't evil or spiteful, it's just hungry. Chrissie was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The creatures rarely attack human - their bad reputation comes mostly from this film - but the idea that a nice little swim could turn into a bloodbath is extremely unsettling.
