10 Horror Movie Openings That Pissed Everyone Off
1. Low-Budget Pinhead - Hellraiser: Revelations
Now, there's absolutely no denying that the Hellraiser franchise had well and truly gone down the tubes by the time 2005's eight film, Hellraiser: Hellworld, had come out.
Though the series had long since taken up residency on the straight-to-video circuit, the sequels at least still looked like actual movies, and above all else Doug Bradley was still lending his presence to the iconic Cenobite leader Pinhead.
But with 2011's follow-up Hellraiser: Revelations, that all changed, and fans were made abundantly clear of this in its very first sequence.
Revelations opens with low-quality handcam footage of two young men, Steven (Nick Eversman) and Nico (Jay Gillespie), boorishly discussing their debauched, horny plans as they venture off on a road trip to Mexico.
We then cut to further ugly, frequently out-of-focus "found footage" of the pair as they use the Lament Configuration puzzle box to summon Pinhead, who is now portrayed by Stephan Smith and voiced by Fred Tatasciore.
The camera moves around so much that we don't get much of a clear look at Pinhead, but it's obvious we're not dealing with Doug Bradley here, and the whole thing looks like a moderately upmarket fan film somebody made with their dad's DV equipment on weekends.
As it turns out, Hellraiser: Revelations was made by Dimension Films for a mere $300,000 in order to keep hold of the franchise's rights. As a result there's nothing artistic about this film - it's a purely cynical, business-minded calculation.
For anyone who wasn't keeping up with the production's troubles and simply wanted to see the new Hellraiser movie, though, those opening four minutes came as quite the rude awakening.
At least it created a franchise nadir so execrable that no future Hellraiser movie will ever get anywhere close.
