10 Horror Movie Remakes Better Than You Remember

One of the biggest criticisms when it comes to horror remakes is that they're 'unnecessary', and 1990's Night of the Living Dead is easily the most unnecessary movie on this list, sticking incredibly close to George A. Romero's seminal work.

However, the few changes it does make are well accomplished. For one, it addresses a clear criticism of the original, that being the character of Barbara. In the 60s version she spends much of the film catatonic and is largely a hindrance, and at worst quite an annoying presence. The Barbara of the remake though benefits from much stronger characterisation, and functions as a more active figure in the plot.

The gore is also upped, thanks in no small part to the lifting of rating restrictions in the decades since the original, and the fact that Tom Savini - the special effects guru who worked on Romero's Dawn and Day sequels - actually helmed this remake.

It's by no means a replacement for (or even an improvement on) the original, but it's a blindside better than some of the other Romero remakes out there.
