Presented as an intimate documentary, found-footage horror Lake Mungo turns the cameras on the Palmer family as they struggle to come to terms with the death of their teenage daughter Alice (Talia Zucker).

Things take a supernatural turn when Alice’s brother, Matthew (Martin Sharpe), believes he’s discovered ghostly apparitions of Alice within grainy video footage. From here, writer-director Joel Anderson’s only feature film expands into a tender examination of the family’s grief whilst a collection of shocking twists shed some light on the events leading up to the 16-year-old’s death.

While each of the revelations take Lake Mungo into unexpected territory, it’s the final twist that proves to be the most bone-chilling part of this film.

After finding their daughter's phone buried at the eponymous lake alongside some of her other possessions, the family discover eerie footage recorded on it by Alice shortly before her death. In the lo-res footage, Alice's own bloated corpse is seen walking towards her from out of the surrounding darkness.

Without any explanation for this haunting lakeside encounter, this scene ends on a note of profound existential terror as viewers are left to reflect on the implications of Alice coming face-to-face with her own imminent death.
