Kiyoshi Kurasawa’s Pulse is a slice of Japanese horror which often goes overlooked. Providing a provocative meditation on loneliness in the digital age, the premise sees ghosts use the internet as a doorway to invade the world of the living. Anyone unfortunate enough to see these spirits is consequently filled with an immense sense of sorrow that eventually causes them to fade into nothingness, leaving only a shadow of themselves behind.

The spirits are often located in what are referred to as “forbidden rooms” that are marked by doors sealed with red tape. It’s when Yabe (Masatoshi Matsuo) enters one of these rooms where viewers are treated to an eerily disquieting encounter with one of the ghosts.

Upon entering the taped-off room, Yabe turns around to discover a woman standing in the shadows behind him. Barely visible in the background, the ghostly figure begins to walk towards him with methodically slow and unnatural movements until she's peering down at him in his hiding place behind the couch.

From the ghost's blank expression to its uncanny way of walking, this scene masterfully instills a creeping sense of dread that seeps under the viewer's skin without the need for any conventional jump scare tactics.
