10 Horror Movie Scenes You Didn’t Realise Were Tricking You
2. Goodnight Mommy - At The Lake
Now this one might upset some people because they don’t agree with me over what the scene depicts. These people can take that problem up with some Reddit forums or something because they’re not changing my mind.
Near the beginning of the film, we see twins Lucas and Elias out and about enjoying the summer. They walk along some rocks, by some nice woodland, and at one point head to a lake.
We see Elias on a floaty looking around for his brother, but next to him in the water is only a burst of bubbles rising to the surface.
The movie continues on, with us seeing the boys at home playing games, torturing their mother, blah blah blah. So you just forget about that weird moment. Only when we find out that Lukas has been dead all along do we realise what we saw.
Their mother tells Elias that Lukas’ death is not his fault, suggesting that Lukas died out in the lake by drowning when Elias wasn’t paying attention and was thus unable to help or save him. The film’s nonchalant treatment of the moment in the flow of the scene tricked us into forgetting it, tuning it out as meaningless when really it held the truth all along.
