4. Bride Of Frankenstein
We're going all the way back to 1935 for this next sequel and even further back to 1931 for the film that spawned it.
James Whale's classic Frankenstein may not be scary by today's standards, but there's no denying the impact it's had on the genre and on pop culture as a whole. Many of the visual conventions we associate with Mary Shelley's creation stem from this movie, and it was selected for preservation by the US Library of Congress in 1991.
Whale made a follow-up to Frankenstein four years later, this time focussing on Dr. Henry Frankenstein's quest to make a female mate for his original creature.
This follow-up has been praised for everything from its set design, to its sound recording, to the performance of its actors, principally Boris Karloff as the monster and Ella Lancaster in the titular role.
Much like the original, Bride of Frankenstein was also preserved by the Library of Congress in 1998, a rare feat for a film and its sequel. The original Frankenstein was a tough act to follow, but James Whale and all those involved surpassed all expectations and proved that lightning could strike twice, if you'll pardon the pun...
