10 Horror Movie Sequels We Didn't Want (But Got Anyway)

3. Amityville: The Awakening (2017)

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
Dimension Films

2017's Amityville: The Awakening had the potential for success had it been released at the right time.

The film tells the story of a family moving to the titular town in order to care for the severely disabled James. However, the sinister forces lurking within the walls see the comatose young man as the perfect conduit.

With an impressive cast including Cameron Monaghan, Jennifer Morrison and Jennifer Jason-Leigh, had The Awakening been released when scheduled it likely would have turned a profit. Initially slated for a 2015 release, the picture would have fitted nicely with the paranormal boom post 2013's The Conjuring. However, the notoriously difficult Dimension Films ordered two rounds of reshoots and the film subsequently went through four more release dates, meeting none of them.

The Awakening became a joke amongst the horror community as each release date came and went. 2017's The Weinstein Effect saw the closure of Dimension Films and ensured that the movie was in for a sore fate. By that time, the market had shifted away from tired paranormal fodder and countless knock-off films baring the Amityville moniker had surfaced. After three long years, Amityville: The Awakening was dumped unceremoniously to Google Play and was quickly forgotten as a colossal failure.

However, one can't help but look at the impressive cast, sleek production design and lovely photography and wonder just what might've been had fate been with this movie.
