10 Horror Movie Trailers That Lied to Everybody

Gareth Edwards' theatrical debut Monsters was a critical success and went on to earn eight times its budget. Since Monsters harboured the DNA of kaiju movies, it's easy to see why the director was later chosen to kickstart the MonsterVerse and direct multiple Godzilla films.

And yet, many people were disappointed by Monsters due to its false advertising. With a title like "Monsters," it was safe to assume the sci-fi horror would prominently feature, well, monsters. With aliens glimpsed at in the trailers, that indicated these towering beasts would play a major role in the film.

Instead, the story centres around a photojournalist who's escorting his employer's daughter out of a quarantined zone. Yes, the extra-terrestrials are there, but they mostly serve as an unseen menace, appearing so infrequently it's difficult to remember what they look like.

To be fair, making the terrifying behemoths a background threat was a great way to maintain focus on the human characters, keeping the story gritty and relatable. Nevertheless, this decision was polarising since Monsters was advertised as a kaiju-like creature feature.
