Despite the fact musicals have been a significant film genre since the dawn of cinema, they're not everybody's cup of tea. Unless Disney is involved, movie musicals often struggle to turn a profit.

In the last few years, studios have combatted this problem by downplaying that the films they're promoting are actually musicals. Although recent adaptations of Mean Girls and The Colour Purple got in trouble for relying on this tactic, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street pulled the same stunt way back in 2007.

Though Tim Burton's gothic slasher is based on Stephen Sondheim's stage musical, it was unclear whether it would follow suit since some trailers contained no songs. Also, Burton isn't known for sticking with the source material, so it was debatable whether this iteration was a musical after watching the trailer.

And there wasn't just some singing. Literally the first line of Sweeney Todd is sung, immediately establishing what kind of movie this is.

Anyone who went to see Sweeney Todd under the belief it was a straightforward horror found themselves befuddled when the titular hairdresser burst into song while hacking and slashing his victims.
