10 Horror Movie Trailers That Lied to Everybody

3. Jennifer's Body

After Megan Fox became a Hollywood star, every studio wanted to capitalise on her sex appeal - a strategy that backfired big time with Jennifer's Body.

Karyn Kusama's 2009 feature revolves around vapid cheerleader Jennifer, played by the Transformers star, who's turned into a flesh-craving succubus. Based on the marketing, Jennifer's Body was an exploitative male-gaze slasher, especially since the trailer opens with the titular character swimming in the nude.

However, instead of getting braindead horror, Jennifer's Body was a smart satire that creatively explored and dissected female empowerment, sexual harassment, adolescent angst, and male toxicity. Even though it's difficult to juggle so many subgenres and ideas, the dark comedy pulled it off without a hitch.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to sell a satirical supernatural feminist horror-comedy. As a result, Jennifer's Body was advertised as teen schlock to appeal to a broader demographic, which led to a heavy backlash.

Luckily, the misunderstood gem has been critically re-evaluated over the years, causing it to develop a cult following. Reception towards Jennifer's Body was initially harsh, but it's a little justified considering how misrepresented it was.
