It is not uncommon in horror films for a group of friends to be hunted down one by one and killed. By the end of the film, only one of the group, usually a female, will be left standing to confront the killer.

Traditionally, the Final Girl will follow a certain set of characteristics, most likely in direct contrast to the rest of her friends: she will be a virgin, always follow the rules, hands her homework in on time with the high probability of receiving top marks if she's of schooling age and will most likely refuse any drink or drugs offered to her by another member of the group.

In short, the Final Girl will more often than not, be the "goody two shoes" in the group, and is likely to be the most resourceful, intelligent character, with the possibility of turning into an action hero by the end of the film. She will also either be the last character to die, or the only one of the protagonists to survive the night.

Trope Examples: Laurie Strode - Halloween (1978), Dana Polk- Cabin in The Woods (2012), Ellen Ripley - Aliens (1986), Sally Hardesty - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
